Last night we tried the side laying and it was great. He had a really deep latch and it was something i could do by myself. It really hurt, however. This might be because I havent breastfed since last thursday and it needs to get toughend back up. I have him in a moby wrap for skin to skin all day and we are working on that latch, but it is really hard. I dont think he is tongue tied because i have seen him stick his tongue past his lips when he is being silly. Diaper output has been normal, many wet diapers and at least 2 really dirty diapers per day (he has little poops thoughout the day too) i feel like the moby wrap is also helping repair our relationship and get us close again.

It sounds like you are feeling way better and it is great you have found a more comfortable position to nurse!

Please do keep an eye on that latch pain, though. Nursing should not really hurt at all. The sensation if all is well can often be described as more like something between a slightly vigorous tugging or pulling and a gentle tugging. It is a myth that nipples need to 'toughen up' for nursing to not hurt. The only time nursing will hurt even if latch is good and there are no other issues is if mom is still recovering from nipple injury (such as cracks or deep bruising) and even in those cases, once latch is better, mom should feel at least some improvement pretty much right away.

Even when baby can get plenty of milk, even if the latch looks fantastic, nipple pain for momma is always an indication something is not quite right. If the pain does not improve really quickly with the new positioning, I strongly suggest to see your LC or another board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) asap if that is at all possible. Sometimes just some tweaking is all that is needed!

I would just point out that just because he doesn't look tongue tied doesn't mean he isn't tongue tied. Posterior tongue ties are nasty, sneaky things where the tip of the tongue looks nice and free, but the back of the tongue has limited mobility. Posterior ties can cause latch pain and also poor milk transference. Are your nipples ever lipstick shaped after a feeding? Blanched, or pinched?

Red? That sounds like it could be infection, possibly thrush (a yeast infection in something other than the "usual" place).

Round is good. Round is how they should be after a feeding. If the nipple is asymmetrical/ridged/creased/wedged/pinched/shaped like a new lipstick, that's an indicator of a latch issue.

ETA: I went back and re-read your first post. Since you had a c-section, I am assuming you also had postoperative antibiotics, which would also increase your risk of thrush, since antibiotics knock out the good bacteria which keep yeast in check. Thrush would also explain the pumping pain.
