Default Getting enough? Swallowing heard only first few mins...

    hi folks,
I'm worried now that maybe the reason my 3 week old lo is nursing day and night is because there isn't enough. I only hear him swallow for the first few minutes after he latches. Is this normal or should there be audible swallowing the whole time? I let him stay latched until he drops off, but, it seems like if he got more milk I would devote less time on my couch stressing.

Is he peeing and pooing enough? If so he is getting enough. I only hear Chloe swallowing for a little while too. At age 3wks they usually go thru a growth spurt so he may also be going thru that. But it is pretty normal at this age for them to eat every 1-2 hours. Hang in there!

I think you're doing the right thing. I say this because it's what I'm doing ! I hear swallowing right after I feel the let down and for a while after, but I'll see her sucking, but hear nothing, but output is good and eventually she comes off on her own. Seems to be working.

    Best wishes,
    Amy

I can't always hear a swallow - I found the the videos on Dr. Newman's website about looking for a pause in the chin to be very helpful:

As others have said - ultimately the wet & poopy diapers are the best measure:

so he does have lots of wet pampers, so you all might be right.

It can be a little odd getting confidence that your baby is getting enough to eat because you're measuring indirectly by things like diapers and weight gain rathe than being able to see how many ounces your baby is getting. With practice it does get easier and more comfortable!

Here's some more info on growth spurts:

If you're worried about your baby getting enough - maybe call your Dr. office to see if you can do a weight check?

    Hi there

Here is an article that can help you determine if your baby is getting enough to eat:
