i admire your desire to keep breastfeeding a priority when you return to work.
you say you are unable to produce enough milk to both feed and store for the baby. HMMMMM are you sure?
If you pump even before nursing the baby your body can and does produce milk while the baby is actively nursing.
milk is produced by stimulation not by waiting for the breasts to fill.
so if you were to designate 2 times during the day that you will pump, your body will quickly adjust and your milk supply will respond.
start pumping now, before returning to work.
your milk supply will stay even if you are only nursing 3-4 times a day but why add the expense of formula when breastmilk is available and free!!!
pumping and then finishing the pumping by hand expressing has been shown to help maintain an abundant milk supply.
