    Default Nursing Manners

My little guy is closing in on 12 months (ack!) and his nursing manners are atrocious. He has a super shallow latch that hurts like crazy and I can't figure out how to get him to latch deeper. He uses his hands to push my breast away while simultaneously pulling at my nipple. It hurts! I can deal with his feet in my face, the 37 unlatch-relatchings and even the occasional bite, but this pulling has me at my wit's end. I have gone so far as to hold his arms down to his side while he nurses, but, as you can imagine, it just made him MAD. The only peaceful sessions we have are in the middle of the night. He is too tired to fight me and has a good, deep latch. How can I encourage him to nurse nicer during the day? TIA!

Do you have a forceful letdown? could baby be trying to control the flow? Or could it perhaps be the opposite- a slow letdown? If it's not about the flow, often the key with fixing latch issues for an older baby is positioning. Do you do something different position wise at night? Does he have room to have his head tilted back, neck open, when he nurses during the day? Or is the chin getting tucked? Also will he open wide when he latches if you tell him and show him?

kellymom has several articles that touch on this. Here are a few: http://kellymom.com/bf/normal/toddlernursing/ & http://kellymom.com/ages/older-infant/biting/ & http://kellymom.com/ages/older-infan...ing-manners-2/

You know, now that you mention it, I do. His night feedings are the only ones that take place in the glider in his room. I'll try to pay better attention to his positioning tonight so I can duplicate it later. Thanks! And also, thanks for the links! There's some great stuff there!
