    Default Skipped growth spurts?

I was just wondering if it sounds like my LO might be missing her growth spurts? Since she came home from the NICU (8 days after birth, born at 33/4 weeks), she has consistently gained 5-11oz per week. Most often it has a been about 9oz, with a few off weeks where she gained 5 or 6. However, she has never had a week where she has gained a more significant amount. So, is she not "spurting"? Or would a week with 2 more oz than her average be considered a growth spurt?

She was 4lbs 2oz at her lowest, now 10lbs 1oz at 11weeks (5 weeks adjusted). She has met many milestones for her actual age and met all the rest for her adjusted.

It sounds like she's gaining well. I wouldn't worry about it. All babies have their own growth patterns, and the only real concern is that there is reasonable growth.

Some babies don't spurt, they just grow at a nice steady pace.

I'm pretty sure my son didn't have a a growth spurt until 9 months. Before that, he only gained about 4 oz per week in the early months. Like mommal said, he's always been a slow but steady gainer. It sounds like your lo is doing just fine. Keep up the great work!

My daughter, also a preemie, had steady weight gain and never seemed to go through a spurt. Not just in numbers but she never seemed to increase her intake periodically either. As long as there is gaining, I wouldn't worry at all.

I feel like my son's growth spurts could be measured by his eating patterns rather than his gaining pattern. He consistently gained 14oz a week until he was 4.5 months old. But at weeks 3, 6 and 12 he ate like a fiend for 3-5 days. Like marathon sessions. Like had to take a nap after dinner because he was going to be attached to my tit steady from 12am till 5am. Like Couldn't get off the couch all day. His weight gain didn't fluxuate during those times. But his eating became much more fervent.

We have had a few fiendish eating days like PP mentioned, but not for quite a while...maybe 4 weeks actual age. Does it mean anything negative for my supply if my LO does not frenzy feed?

Also, does anyone know when I should look for a possible growth spurt, since she was a preemie? Should it be her actual age or her adjusted age? I've gotten conflicting information from two pediatricians (from the same practice) and my LC.

larkface, just nurse on demand, at early cues, and you (and your supply) will be fine. even for full-term babies, growth spurts just happen "around" weeks 3, 6, etc. i would just prepare for a couple of those in the future at some point, and not worry about when

I think you shouldn't be too concerned with it, as long as weight gain is steady. Preemies are a different breed and depending on the issues at birth, just don't follow the same curves or growth patterns that a full term baby does. My daughter is a perfectly healthy 6 year old now. But she never had growth spurts. There was never any frenzied feeding. There were never all night nursing sessions. She never had any huge weight gains at one time. Her weight gain was steady and she followed her own growth pattern. Keep an eye on things like temperament, diaper output and weight gain in general. Try not to concern yourself with each increment of growth. You will drive yourself mad and forget to enjoy your sweet baby. Just be sure that the doctors are charting her growth on the corrected age, otherwise they will start to hassle you about her dropping off the charts.
