Unhappy 8 month old will not correct latch

I've been nursing my son for almost nine months, and things have been going downhill for the past several weeks. It seems like since he started getting teeth he refuses to latch correctly. My nipples are cracked and bleeding, we're treating for thrush, and I just got through a bout of mastitis this weekend.

I've done everything I know of to correct his latch, but once he's on the breast he always pulls back to a shallow latch. I'll pop him off, he'll fuss, he'll latch on, pull back again, lather rinse repeat. He's not actually biting me, so at least we have that going for us. ;-) He's also not refusing to nurse - he'll actually grab my breast and pull it to him.

I'm going to try to find a lactation consultant tomorrow but I don't know how long it will take us to be able to see one (I work full time). Does anyone have any suggestions in the meantime? He takes bottles of EBM at day care so I suppose I could just pump, but I'd rather not go that route.

He has started solids but neither one of us are ready to wean yet. He still does a lot of comfort nursing - wants to nurse right when we get home from day care even if he finished eating right before I picked him up, nurses a ton when we travel, etc. I love our nursing time and hate that it's become so painful. Any advice is welcome!!

My first thought is that you want to get in to see the LC as soon as possible. Cracked and bleeding nipples are nothing to trifle with. What are the cracks like? Are there multiple cracks per nipple, are they slit-like, do they radiate? Or is there just one big crack, perhaps fairly deep, that gales wide after your baby finishes nursing? (The former would indicate thrush, the latter a latch issue.)

Is baby being treated for thrush, too? Sometimes an uncomfortable mouth can cause latching issues.

Thank you so much for your response! Knowing the difference between the cracks is really helpful. They are like the second one you mentioned, deep and wide open when little guy is done nursing. I'm hunting down an LC today.

Ouch! See the LC and see what she says. It's unusual for an older baby to suddenly develop such a poor latch that he causes cracks with it. Bad thrush cracks might also look like bad latch cracks, so don't eliminate the thrush possibility yet.
