    Default Cow's milk introduction

I plan to continue nursing past year 1. I would imagine I don't need to give my DD cow's milk. Will she accept it if I offer it much later, like year 2 or 3? Thanks!

Do you think that if you wait until 2 or 3 to introduce ice cream or candy she will reject it? I'm pretty sure if someone is going to acquire a taste for something when it's introduced wont matter. My daughter got soy milk starting around 13 months and didn't get any cows milk until over 2. She doesn't like plain milk now, will only have it in cereal or chocolate milk. But then again my husband and I never drink milk either. So who knows if it's a taste preference or an exposure thing. I personally wouldn't worry. Plenty of people live healthy lives without ever drinking milk.

If you introduce cow's milk now, there's no guarantee the baby will drink it. If you introduce at at age 2-3, there's no guarantee the baby will drink it. Some kids like cow's milk, some don't. I didn't really introduce cow's milk to my first daughter until age 2, and she likes it just fine. Plain. In fact, the other day I got her a vanilla milk for lunch and she tolde she likes the plain stuff better. Weird, right?!

In my personal experience my kids took to cows milk like a couple of calves even though it was not given to them until sometime between 2 & 3 years. Before that they nursed and had water with meals. Juice was for birthday parties only! We also managed to avoid offering flavored/sweetened milks. I think it does have to do with personal taste as well.

One treat you could consider offering if you ever find this to be an issue later on and you really want your kids to have milk is warm milk sweetened with honey.

And the admonition that kids 'need' cow milk is due to nutrients in or added to milk that can be found in other food sources.

And almond milk actually has more calcium than cow's milk.

^^I was going to ask pedi about this, can I give almond milk and starting when? My son is 8.5 months but I'm browsing the toddler forum, sorry. Not planning on doing it until age 1, when I'd like to stop pumping at work and just nurse at night.

Wait until a year for almond milk. Almonds and other tree nuts are top allergens, so you want to wait on those. And, obviously, because whole nuts are a choking hazard, wait until baby has a full set of teeth and is a good chewer to introduce them. Usually that happens around age 2-3.
