Thread: Only feeding for 5mins

    Default Only feeding for 5mins

My little girl fed for 70mins at 11pm last night and then slept til 5.30am but only fed for 4mins. Since then she has been feeding for 4 -6 mins every 2-3hrs. She has been having wet nappies but not very many poops. And even then the poops are tiny. She still falls asleep straight afterwards.

Should I be worried? Can't get hold of HV or doctor so need advice.

She is 3weeks old and before now has been feeding fine for about 10 - 20 mins at a time every 2 -3 hours.

as long as she has sufficient wet diapers (and a small amt of poopy diapers is normal) that is fine. The best thing is to let baby set their own schedule, keep feeding on demand.

My babies nurse for less than 5 min at a time, I don't look at the clock so not sure how often they do it but they become very efficient and are fast eaters. As pp said, as long as she makes wet and dirty diapers, she's fine

Your milk is more plentiful in the morning (something about hormones), so baby may get the same in a shorter time period.

Totally normal. My babies were/are fast eaters during the day but long feeders at night. And fast again in the early morning. I think you're doing great

Hi thanks, I was worried because its such a dramatic change. Every nappy has been wet so far so that's normal but her fontanelle is sunken, doesn't that mean she's dehydrated?

Her soft spot is sunken? No that is not good, generally. Are you sure though? Does she have jaundice? When you say her diapers are wet do you mean you are getting at least 6 soaked diapers per day (probably more with a 3 wk old)...

Yep, definitely sunken. Not soaked nappies but she has definitely peed in them. 6 wet nappies since 8am this morning ( now 22.34)

It's normal for it to be a *bit* sunken. But if it's dramatic I would take her to the doc.
