I have had all my babies averaging over 9 lbs and none needed supplementation because they were "big." Only 1 even got blood glucose testing, and honestly, a lowish blood glucose seems to be kind of normal...and it stimulates baby to nurse, but it sure scares a lot of doctors

I think this requirement is undermining your confidence.

The BEST way to make sure your baby is fine...to nurse, ensure baby is latching well and milk transfer is happening. Even one bottle of milk that young can cause problems for baby -- nipple preference -- and mom -- supply problems.

Pre-birth weight estimates are notoriously off. Dont worry about how "big" your baby is.

My second two were over 9 lbs and while they did watch their glucose levels, they never supplemented. They said they might with the DS1, I told them no, but it never came down to a battle. With DS2, they told me that if his blood glucose levels got low, they would just bring him to nurse more often. Out of all three hospitals I gave birth in, that was definitely the most breastfeeding friendly.

    Be insistent.

Thanks for all of your kind words and advice, ladies. I've decided to stop pumping before our little one is born-I don't want to get into oversupply issues and having problems with him not being able to learn to breastfeed. However, because I have pumped a few times, I am

    1) going to bring some of it to the hospital just in case all hell breaks lose and the nurses win (I would rather have the colostrum available than having to give him formula)
    2) confident that the supply of colostrum I have within my breasts (should have at least half an ounce readily available - which is way more than the 5-7 mL his tummy can hold) will be ample supply for my son should his blood glucose levels get low.

I'm glad I posted this, it made me aware that not all hospitals practice the supplementation for blood glucose screening, and it gave me more ammunition going in to be confident to tell them no. Thank you again.

Sounds like a plan! Yes just remember your LO will most likely only take one breast at a time with how much colostrum you'll have. My DD is 4.5 months and still only takes one side per feeding Good luck! And just remember we are all here behind you backing you up
