Here are some things I found helpful:
    - stroking baby's lips (I found upper worked better for me, but some people have better success with lower) with your nipple.
    - open your mouth big to demonstrate to baby.

And this isn't exactly getting baby open wider, but may also help. Make a "nipple sandwich" where you make the portion of the breast that's going into baby's mouth flattened so baby can get a better latch.

Agree with above post. I also strongly reccomend trying laid back positioning. In these positions, baby can come to the breast in a different manner which encourages baby to more or less 'self attach' and this basically gets around the need to "get baby" to open wide. Even if using the ideas above, in laid back position mom is much more comfortable and this often makes a tremendous difference.

If nipple pain continues and/or baby is not able to latch well and consequently is not getting enough, call a La Leche League Leader for phone help (a few do home visits too) and/or consider hiring a Board Certified Lactation consultant for hands on assistance.

Nurse frequently, at least 12 times a day but not in any specific pattern. Don't worry if you just nursed baby 15 minutes ago. If baby is cueing or you feel like it, nurse baby again. Babies learn to nurse by nursing, and frequent nursing will help keep breasts soft (not engorged.) Engorged, full breasts are harder to latch onto. Also a calm baby latches much more easily than an upset crying baby.

My guy still won't open his mouth very far, but has good daiper output and is gaining great .
He is 9 weeks and luckily his strong suction makes up for it. Once he gets in the tip he sucks in the rest of the areola.

I hope you have better luck!

Thanks I have nursed two other children but don't remember my nipples hurting as much.

Can you tell us more about the pain you're experiencing? Does it happen when baby latches on, at a certain point during the feeding, or after the feeding is over? What shape are your nipples after nursing- symmetrical, like pencil erasers, or asymmetrical/wedged/creased like new lipsticks? Has anyone checked your baby for a tongue tie?
