I went back to work about a month ago, when DS almost 4 months old (so he's now 4.5 months). At his 4 month check up, he was 14lbs 7oz, perfectly on track. He's been exclusively BF with no formula (yay!) but obviously is fed via a bottle when I'm away. Here's my schedule so far (it's pretty rough, though he's been eating between 5:30 and 6 pretty consistently):
~5:45am LO nurses
~6:45am pump while eating breakfast
7:15am, 7:30pm leave for work
5:45pm arrive home
~6pm LO nurses
7pm, 7:15pm LO goes to bed
So, that means at most, I'm emptying my breasts 6x per day. Is that enough to maintain supply? The "breastfeeding & the working mom" class I took said you have to empty 7-8 times to maintain supply. Complicating things, he just started sleeping through the night 2 weeks ago, and he used to wake up 2-3 times to eat. It was like, from one day to the next, he slept for 10 hours.
I feel like I'm really struggling to keep up as things are. Partly, I think he's being overfed while I'm away. Basically I pump maybe 15 oz total with 4 sessions, but like today, he had two 7oz bottles, followed by 2 other 3-4oz bottles. My husband is home with the baby, and just bought variable flow nipples instead of medium (and we're going to start giving him smaller bottles).
My questions are:
- Is 6x per day enough to maintain supply?
- If not, then how should I make up for it? I'm thinking my options are to pump before bed or to DF the baby. I'd really rather not wake up at 3am if I can avoid it!! Right now, I'm really feeling empty at the end of the day. Will my body start producing more in the evenings if I pump before bed?
- Would fenugreek help me to produce more during the day?
Sorry this is all over the place. I'm on one hand trying not to stress about it, but I'm worried that my supply will keep going down.
Thank you so much for any help/advice...
