It's very rare for babies to self-wean before a year. And if they do it at just 10 weeks, it's probably due to bottle preference.
I bet your step-mom simply has no idea how long babies naturally nurse. I know that when my mom was having her kids, in the 70s and 80s, nursing for a couple of weeks was considered more than sufficient, nursing for a couple of months was considered a long time, and nursing for a full year was in the "whoa, that's creepy!" zone. If you nursed for more than a year you kept it very much to yourself, because people would assume that you were nuts, or maybe a pervert.
