    Default Novocain while breastfeeding?

    Hi everyone,

I've got a cavity that needs filling tomorrow morning and am wondering whether it's safe to feed my LO after getting the anesthesia? He's 2.5 months.

I am not thrilled at the prospect of pumping and dumping.
I do have frozen milk for tomorrow if necessary. However, Grandma tried to give him a bottle today while I was at the dentist and he would not take it. If I do have to lay off the nursing tomorrow, is it safe to assume that he'll eventually take the bottle if hungry enough?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Yes. It is safe. The dentist may or may not tell you not to nurse - but that is totally unnecessary. Most dentists use lidocaine and that is given to a lot of women after deliver to numb you up for the stitches and you are allowed to nurse after that. Ill find the kellymom link for you.

Thank you! I should add, pediatrician said not to nurse for 8 hours afterwards. The dentist simply said they defer to what patients' OBs or pediatricians say.

What a lot of people misunderstand about drs is.

    1. They think drs know about nutrition. They do not. This is a dietician, or nutritionists field not your average md/ped.

    2. That they know about medication. Again they do NOT. This is a pharmacists field.

A doctor goes to school to diagnose illnesses. Not for nutrition or drug knowledge. Their knowledge on both are VERY limited.

So instead of asking a dentist or dr, you would get better results asking a pharmacist when it comes to drugs. Or just contacting your local LLL leader most have a book on drugs (we're talking about RX drugs, not street drugs) and the effects on your milk. You can contact them and they can look it up in the book and tell you the risk of drug in your milk, how much etc.

You might want to tell your pediatrician about this book and this website: Medications and Mothers Milk by Thomas Hale and www.infantrisk.org

Completely safe. Go get your dental work done, come home, nurse baby freely. No need to pump and dump. Anesthetics used during dental procedures and BF has been studied extensively, and is a non-issue.
Exclusively BF since 2/1/11 with no end in sight.

Thanks all for your messages! I went ahead and nursed as usual - no pumping, no dumping, no bottles - and we both made it through the day just fine.
I'm really glad I brought the matter to the forum! Thanks again everyone!
