Thread: Oversupply issue or reflux

    Default Oversupply issue or reflux

My baby is one month old and has been gaining weight like crazy. She was 8lbs 10oz at birth, 9lbs 3 days later, 10lbs 1oz at her 2 week appt and 12lbs 1oz at her 4 week check up. For the past 3 weeks she feels the need to eat all the time because my breasts are constantly leaking. She has also become quite fussy and sometimes will push the breast away or cry at it. As soon as she gets ready to eat, my breasts will start leaking tremendously. She rarely spits up, but does have quite a bit of gas that frustrates and hurts her. I just started to give her gripe water and that seems to be helping with the gas. I would appreciate any tips on how to help keep her and my supply on a more happy medium relationship.

Do you feed her from both sides every feed? I started doing the block feeding and that seemed to help. I'll offer the right only and then next time offer the right first again then switch. It took a few weeks but it seems I have less milk (although I still have an over supply issue which is whyni started donating breast milk). Good luck!

the best tried and true way to regulate your milk supply is to feed on demand, 8-12 times per 24 hours. let the baby finish one side and nurse till the breast is comfortably soft. If the baby is satiated you can wait to nurse from the other breast until the next feed.
If you do not need to express milk, like for work or school, then don't express milk.

This link covers oversupply and what to do about it: http://kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html

Just be careful with block feeding- it is possible to reduce supply to a level which is too low. So keep a careful eye on her diapers if you choose to block feed. If they start to dip too low, you need to go back to double-sided feedings.
