    Default Bls-daycare etc

so i started asking about how BLS works when baby is at daycare? any feedback or advice? Sam is 7 months and eats purees and fruit/veg solids when we are together. he actually isnt a big eater in general and chokes all the time and pukes when he eats.

For DCP - I ONLY sent with baby foods that baby had "mastered" at home - food was both safe and something baby could eat well without major gagging. I provided all foods so was in total control of what baby was eating. I let DCP know that baby was VERY good at self-feeding and to please also have baby self-feed at day care. DCP at first thought I was a bit nuts, but was won over once she saw how well baby did at self-feeding. Once my LO were in the toddler room, the teachers were very impressed at self-feeding skills. I smiled and said that was because baby had ALWAYS self-fed.

For DS1 - this meant he really didn't have much solids at DCP until closer to 9 mo old. DCP hated me and kept trying to push me to send foods but I would only send the 1 or 2 foods DS1 could eat ok at home.

For DS2 - this meant I was sending in tons of foods (that he could self-feed at home) by the time he was 7 mo old.

Both LO - I only did NEW foods at home.

You KNOW that he's ok with mostly breastmilk until about a year. IME it's a matter of standing firm and politely ignoring DCP who are more accustomed to babies following the Gerber schedule of solids.

I think it kind of depends on the DCP, too. One place I worked in was great, and really preferred for babies to feed themselves. And another wouldn't LET them feed themselves until they were in the toddler room. Is your DCP open to it, or allowed to be open to it according to their rules?

I have family watch my baby, so they don't have any stringent regulations (other than their opinions ) but once they started seeing him feed himself, they were pretty amazed.

Also, who says baby needs 3 meals a day at 6 months? You could tell the DCP they are getting solids at home for awhile, and then when they are better at self feeding, let them add another meal. That was what I did for the 3 weeks or so Connor was watched by a babysitter after 6 months. He just had dinner with me

I'd also let the DCP know that around 6-8 months is when it was recommended for baby to start exploring self feeding, even those who were fed purees at 4 months. It just SEEMS like it's "so soon" because you haven't been feeding solids for 2-3 months like people used to do. That's one of the things that made the most sense for me.

Good luck! BLS is so fun to watch

Right I know this is just an experiment at this point. He eats one time per day with solids, usually about 3Tablespoons of cereal or a fruit/veggie. At home on the weekend I do smushed banana/avocado pieces/small veggies Os from "Plum", etc but I just worry about gagging at DCP so I've done purees there. She will do what I want (CD, breast milk, etc) but I just don't know if I would trust anyone other than Mike and I to watch as he gets the hang of it.

He's so different than Max who was a nursing champ and solid eating piggy

Just wait ... and keep saying to yourself "my LO are different people ... my LO are different people"

After our experiences with DS1 who was NOT interested in solids until around 8.5 or 9 mo, we ASSUMED DS2 would be the same and were holding back on solids. Um - yeah - DS2 was a very different kid and LOVED solids from the start.

With DS I sent purees when they asked even though I knew he didn't eat. With DD she was eating almost everything on their menus by the time she was 7.5/8 months. So I just had them send me the weeks menu and marked off what she couldn't have. There was rarely anything.

    My LO were totally different.

DS1 - didn't really eat solids until 8.5 or 9 mo. Lots of dramatic gagging (to the point of throwing up). Reminder that gagging is very dramatic but is not choking (obstructed airway).

DS2 - ate EVERYTHING we gave him and was doing 3 "meals" a day by 7 mo old, self-fed. Never really gagged unless he just had crammed too much into his little mouth.

ITA to doing foods AT HOME until LO has "mastered" the food and THEN sending the food to DCP.
