There are different avenues. I sent mine to bank in Indiana (http://www.immb.org) run through the Human Milk Banking Association of North America (www.hmbana.org). It wasn't the closest to me when I got started, but they really needed the milk at the time and apparently still do. They were really helpful in explaining their process and communicating.

There are other places, but I haven't worked with them, so maybe someone else who has can chime in.
I breast milk fed my Blossom for fifteen months (after exclusively pumping for thirteen). My Bud (nineteen months) is still nursing directly (after a rough start that included a few months of pumping and supplementing with mommy's milk).

the closest one to me is Raleigh, which is about 4hrs from me..........do you have to have a special kind of pump &/or store/ship a certain way?

Contact the place where you'd like to donate. They will have info about storing / shipping.

I donated to a HMBANA milk bank - see my siggie for the HMBANA link.
