Question Trying to BF again after a 7 week hiatus

When my first daughter was born, I was the very definition of young, stupid, and clueless. I was afraid my daughter wasn't getting enough milk and started pumping (she was three whole days old). I wasn't able to get a lot, obviously, but I believed that this meant I would never be able to produce milk and started strictly formula feeding. When I became pregnant with my second daughter, I was determined to breastfeed. The first two weeks went smoothely, then I developed mastitis. I thought I was going to die. With the pressures of a newborn, no sleep, and a not-so-happy-with-the-new-baby toddler, I gave up and decided to stop breastfeeding. For the next two weeks, I went on a pumping schedule and took birth control pills to decrease my supply. I was terrified that if I kept nursing, I might get mastitis again. My daughter was 4 1/2 weeks old when I completely stopped breastfeeding/pumping. She is now 10 weeks old and I have decided to start breastfeeding again. It is just so beneficial for babies and on top of that, formula is so expensive! I am still able to hand express a few drops, so I'm quite hopeful. I've started by having a much skin to skin time as possible with her and bringing her to the breast whenever she needs comfort instead of using her pacifier. Not gonna lie, she isn't a huge fan. She will latch on for a few seconds and suckle, then get angry and scream. But I figure that even that is better than nothing. I'm also pumping every time that she takes a bottle (about every 3 1/2 hours.) I'm considering taking fenugreek (sp?), but am not sure about its effectiveness. Does this sound like a good plan? Are there any other things I should be doing? I'll take all of the advice I can get!

Welcome! It's terrific that you would like to start nursing again. The fact that your baby actually will latch on and nurse, the fact that you already stayed pumping, and the fact that you still have some milk are all things which put you way ahead in the game. I suggest checking out the PP's link and also this one, on getting a baby back to the breast: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...to-breast.html and this one on increasing supply when pumping: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/p..._decrease.html and this one on establishing milk supply when the baby is not nursing: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/ma...pply-pump.html and this one on weaning from formula: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/decrease-formula.html

I personally would use the fenugreek. I felt it was useful in helping me increase supply- but IMO it is not a substitute for frequent use of a high-quality pump (think hospital-grade rental).
