    Default pediatrician recommended.....?

Morning Mamas... Happy mummy i am... I have a beautiful happy baby...

anywho... so my pediatrician that i should be giving my dd vit d with iron supplement POLY VISOL even though i was exclusively bf until the last couple of weeks. She loves watermelon and has a couple of pieces which she sucks the juices right out of and i have tried avacado, sweet potato.

OK well i dont want to give her that because it has colors and other crap plus dd hates it and its too much to make her swallow plus i have read that all the iron is not absorbed and its better absorbed in food.

I am giving her vit d which is just that in 1 drop.. berry flavor which she likes but am unsure what to do about the iron. The pediatrician told me bm doesnt have enough iron and that she will not have enough in her body to absorb. Now she wants me to give her the poly vi sol til upto a year. I think shes an idiot.. she also doesnt seem to think sweet potato has carbohydrates? ...I think shes an idiot :. basically.. and wish to soon move...

she told me they follow the american academy of pediatrics but some of the stuff she says just doesnt make sense....

Please can you help i need some advise on iron, and if i have to be giving her this awful stuff. She was full term and 3 days, very healthy, round and now 19lbs at 6 months.

    Thanks again

I wouldn't give it to her. Did she check your baby's iron levels? Was there a reason for concern?

If you really want to give an iron supplement, Floradix is a natural choice. But iron is very available in food: meats, eggs, dried fruits, organ meats, etc. Has your daughter's pediatrician determined that your daughter is low in iron? Not all babies actually GET low.

I don't think you need to. i would keep up with the vitamin d. Watermelon is actually a great source of iron too. And any kind of beans/lentils, which DS loved plain from a very early age.

BM is low in iron, but it's 100% available for absoption, unlike the iron supplements, which are only like 4% available for absorption.

We only do vitamin D, and it's the one drop thing...Carlson's baby D drops. I never have done any other supplements. They are not necessary.

great thank you. No the pediatrician hasnt any reason to think dd is low in iron. I will just carry on with the vit d and watermelon and start trying lentils.

If she's pushing you on the iron, you can request a blood test. That way you know for sure if your LO needs it or not.

That is just silly. We have had several doctors tell us that iron is more bioavailable in breastmilk. Unless there is reason to worry, like if your baby was premature, there is no need for iron at this point. I do recommend testing at a year though, which is pretty standard in most places. DS2 had normal iron at a year, but when he was retested at 18 months his levels were low. He takes floradix, but his pediatrician just the other day commented that he was also getting iron from breastmilk, which he wouldn't get if he was just drinking cow's milk. I would just keep doing what you are doing with the vitamin D supplements.
