    Default I need reassurance

My lo is 3 1/2 months old and I have had a rough road. Not with bf...that is going fine but I have been sick with strep throat, an eye infection (3 times) and now mastitis. So I've been on a lot of antibiotics and I feel like I've been taking a lot of motrin and tylenol in my baby's first months of life. Is breast milk still the best thing for her? I worry that all the medication is not good for her and maybe she would be better off with formula. Any thoughts?

hi mama! i am so sorry to hear that you have been sick. i had mastitis and it was awful!

it is hard to know what is ok when you are breastfeeding. i take tylenol if i need it but i have not taken motrin. antibiotics are commonly given to nursing moms for mastitis. If your dr gave you the ok with the motrin and antibiotics there is no need to worry.

there is a great phone number to call is you ever have a question about medicine being ok with breastfeeding:806 352 2519

I have not used it but have it as a contact in my phone just in case. i have heard amazing things about the people who answer the phones. give them a call just to ease your mind!

    all the best

It's worth it! This is a short time in the grand scheme of things and before you know it you'll be healthy, nursing and glad you kept with it. I took Motrin RX strength with both boys, it's regularly prescribed so don't worry about it. If you want to use a probiotic because of the antibiotics, you and baby can benefit from it. Otherwise keep nursing you're doing great, many of us just get a rotten start!

you won't be on medication forever and IMO bm even with small amts of medicine in it is still WAY better than formula. You've come this far, it's totally worth it, you can do it!

with the PPs. Your milk is absolutely still the best thing for your baby, even with traces of antibiotics and pain relievers. and remember, it's not like formula is "pure" compared to breastmilk. It's known to have all sorts of trace and not-so-trace chemicals in it, things like BPA (http://www.ewg.org/reports/bpaformula), melamine (yes, even in the US: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...112600386.html), perchlorate (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/t/story?id=7242880&page=1), And let's not forget the occasional insect part (http://abbottnutrition.com/news/pres...ards&year=2010).

It sounds like you've had a lot of bacterial infections in the last 3 months. That makes me think that either the antibiotics you are taking are not knocking the bacteria out (in other words, you are infected with a strain of bacteria that is resistant to the antibiotics you have been taking), or there's a source of bacteria in your environment that is reinfecting you. I would ask your doctor to do a bacterial culture on you, andake sure you are taking the RIGHT antibiotic for your infection. I knew a mom who ended up with 6 months of repetitive mastitis infections because she was repeatedly prescribed the wrong antibiotics.
