Thread: My freezer was left open overnight

  1. #1

Default My freezer was left open overnight

I have a separate freezer that I store my pumped milk in. It's out in the garage, and apparently the door didn't get fully latched last night. My husband found the door wide open this morning around 6, so the door was open for about 12 hours and most things in the freezer had started thawing (it was in the 40s last night).

I had around 150 oz of stored milk out there - do I have to toss it? I checked the bags after we found the door open, and most of them were still partially frozen. A few were fully thawed, and they are being tossed.

Ditto How seriously disappointing. Were there any that stayed completely frozen? Also, what did the partially frozen look like? Was it frozen in the middle and liquid at the edges or more like a firm slushy throughout?

I thought thawed milk was good 24 hours? I mean, it was stilll kinda cold, an ideal fridge is between 30-35 degrees. . .

Idk, maybe I'm too lax but wouldn't it be ok if it smelled alright?

(Keep in mind I have never had enough milk of my own for a freezer stash)

That sucks . That happened to me just when I was so proud of the liquid gold mine I had in the freezer, I had to toss a few. I stayed at home, and ask DB to give the bottles of the ones I didn't toss while I pumped (it sucked! but at least I had a new stash). Some that were thawing just a little bit I left in the freezer and DD had them on the next day, and the day after and she was just fine .

Can you not use the thawed bags now? They are good for 24 hours.

s about losing the milk, that is really heartbreaking

Use the thawed milk in the next 12 hours. If you have to even make baby teething crackers for later, do it. But IMHO, if it's still frozen, save it. That happened to me a couple years a go..Someone left the freezer open. Some stuff thawed, but the BM was in there deep enough that it was still solid, so I kept it.

.... When the sitter leaves a bottle in the fridge to thaw and she doesn't use it, I make something out of it for DD to eat like mashed potatoes with breastmilk. Although I don't know how old your baby is .

The partially frozen bags were frozen in the middle with liquid around the edges.

DD is only 10 weeks old, so it can't be used for solids for quite a long time. Using it up in the next 24 hours won't really work, since she won't take a bottle from me (and dad is on a trip).

Sounds like I need to probably dump it and start pumping more often to get the stash built back up. I go back to work in 2 weeks - having extra in the freezer eases some of the pressure of pumping at work.
