    Default How big?

    Hi everyone!

I have an 8 month old (no teeth yet) and just now really starting to give him a little something to eat. I'm doing BLW but I'm absolutely horrified that he'll choke. I've read that if he feeds himself, there's a less likely chance he'll choke so I've been having him feed himself. Lately, I've been giving him ripe pear where he could just mash it with his tongue.

My main question is... how big or small should I cut his food? With the pear, I just have this huge chunk for him to hold and put in his mouth.

Any help or comfort will greatly be appreciated =). Thanks!!

I think I remember the size of big french fries being a good recommendation.

Have you ever taken a course in CPR? It's a good thing to have for all parents. I have never had to use it but it sure makes me more confident to give her chunks of food!

the thing too with BLW is that they are gonna gag and urge and cough and make your heart go faster everytime they eat but this is normal and part of it and at some point they even get really good at "dechoking" themself...!
i am totally with "marilyn" who says to take the course at least you know what to do so that makes you feel better !!
And don't give up it is so wrth it after a few months !

yup and avoid things that are hard and small and round.
    Think grapes and hot dogs...

You child is more likely to choke on a coin or broken toy or ballon then food.

My child cpr instructor said nothing bigger then a dime. I like sticks of apple about 3mm wide (appr 1/8 in) or banana broken into its three pieces then chopped (I toss these in baby cereal to make them less sticky)
