frustration with overactive letdown
I am really frustrated with breastfeeding in general. My son is 11 weeks old and I've been dealing with overactive letdown from the beginning. When he was about 8 weeks old, I started block feeding which solved most of his gas issues. I had also been using a nipple shield and transitioned completely off of that around 9 weeks. Everything was going pretty well except in the evening. When it was time for bed, he would refuse to nurse, or nurse for a few seconds or a few minutes and then pop off and scream. This would continue for and hour or two and then he would settle down, nurse, and go to sleep.
Beginning this week, his popping off is happening earlier and earlier in the day. Today, he refused to nurse most of the day unless we were lying down in bed. He has been growing well and gaining weight, but breastfeeding has become a battle. Its disheartening.
Now, I am concerned that he's not eating enough during the day, or am I offering the breast so often that he is getting small meals throughout the day but is getting enough? I am not sure if I should wait for him to be hungry, or continue offering all the time.
Any advice would be helpful. Thanks
Re: frustration with overactive letdown
It doesn't hurt to offer all the time. And many small meals are just as good as a few large ones, as long as diaper output and weight gain remain normal.
Is there any reason why you don't want to lie down to nurse? If your LO is happy, and you can rest... What's not to like? :o
