frozen stash, time running out?
My daughter is 11 weeks old and I return to work next week. I have a lot of milk in the freezer but it's mainly from the first two weeks of her life. I had mastitis and lots of engorgement issues then. The milk is in a freezer (the fridge freezer kind) so that means it has a storage life of 3-4 months right? So I'm thinking that any milk that isn't used in the next few weeks basically needs thrown out. Is this correct? That's a lot of milk I'll throw away. :cry
Re: frozen stash, time running out?
Is it a freezer that is inside the fridge or does it have a separate door? If it has a separate door, I would personally keep it for the 6 months. As long as you aren't holding the door open a lot, it really isn't much different than a deep freeze, IMO. My freezer is as cold as my deep freeze.
Re: frozen stash, time running out?
It's got a separate door. It's one of those side by side deals. Is the time recommendation because the milk loses it's good qualities or because the milk actually spoils after that long?
Re: frozen stash, time running out?
I think it loses some more of the immune properties. It is always best to use the oldest milk first for this reason, even if it isn't that old.
Re: frozen stash, time running out?
I have used milk past the expiration, and it's fine.
If you don't want to feed it, bake with it and freeze the results.
