I have one of these that I got last year and love it very much. This year, I need to figure out how to put it over a back carried baby!
I think this is very elegant looking, but I would agree with the review -- hemp is scratchy feeling. I'm not sure how warm it would be for a very cold area, but I made a hemp/silk maternity coat last year and did OK with that. I've seen directions on the internet to make ponchos. I think if you google babywearing poncho you'll find them. I don't have a link handy ![]()

This was the pattern I followed.

Yes, I've worn an amautik, through two winters, with my second child.
I asked friends and family to contribute to the purchase for a combined birthday/x-mas gift. I ordered one made for -40 with a windchill, and I have fond memories of sauntering forth with my toddler on my back under clear sunny skies, through fresh snow, while everyone else was huddled indoors. Getting outdoors keeps me well, and I can't recommend this style of garment highly enough. Should you acquire one, I trust you will treat it and the traditional owners of its design with respect. |

I remember seeing a knitting pattern well before I was pregnant for a peacoat extender designed for babywearing. It could easily be sewn as well. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find it, but maybe describing it will help.
It was a large rectangle with buttons on one side and buttonholes on the other, knitted to fit right on your peacoat. (It actually looked like a sheet of notebook paper with buttons instead of holes.) It should be fairly simple to whip up in fleece, even if you want to add a hood for your baby.
